Iowa Real Estate State Requirements
The information contained below is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education, experience, and examination requirements established by the Iowa Real Estate Commission.
The information provided below can be found on the Commission's website . However, we recommend you contact the Real Estate Commission for more detailed information and for any changes which may have occurred.
Salesperson License
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must complete a commission approved course of at least 60 hours during 12 months prior to taking the examination
- As of 1/1/2009, the following additional three courses must be completed:
- 12 hours Buying Practices
- 12 hours Listing Practices
- 12 hours Developing Professionalism and Ethical Practice
- Pass a state exam
- Must be sponsored by a broker after passing the state exam
- Obtain errors and omissions insurance
- Undergo a criminal history check
- Submit application and appropriate fee
Broker License
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must have 24 months of active salesperson experience
- Must complete at least 72 Broker prelicense course within in 24 months of taking the examination, this education is in addition to the required salesperson course
- Pass the state exam
- Undergo a criminal history check
- Provide verification of current errors and omissions insurance
- Brokers who have never renewed as a Salesperson must also provide documentation of completing the following course (not applicable to Salespersons originally licensed after December 31, 2008):
- 12 hours Buying Practices
- 12 hours Listing Practices
- 12 hours Developing Professionalism and Ethical Practice
Continuing Education
- All Salesperson originally licensed prior to 1/1/2009 that are renewing for the first time, must complete the following 36 hours of education:
- 12 hours Buying Practices
- 12 hours Listing Practices
- 12 hours Developing Professionalism and Ethical Practice
- The hour requirement for subsequent renewals is 36 hours. Of these hours, salespersons must complete::
- Law Update-8 hours, and
- Ethics-4 hours.
- 24 hours in elective courses.
- All Salespersons originally licensed after 12/31/2008 and all brokers must complete the following:
- Law Update-8 hours, and
- Ethics-4 hours.
- 24 hours in elective courses.
Sales agents renew December 31st every 3 years.
